Westone UM2: Beautiful Sound, Comfortable Fit.
These are a very serious "sweet spot" in today’s market for earphones. In terms of sound, they have an uncanny naturalness to them. They remind me of classic British speakers like Spendor or Harbeth in that respect. They are probably the most comfortable earphones out there - especially when you get the Shure "Black Foamie" ear inserts to replace the stock yellow ones from Westone (which are not bad, but many UM2 fans prefer the "Black Foamies" from Shure, which fit UM2’s perfectly.)
I am very much an audiophile and I’ve tried earphones by Shure (entire line, from 210 to 530) and Ultimate Ears, etc. I admire most earphones starting at around $150, but overall I prefer the Westone UM2. (BTW the $100 Westone UM1’s are a nice "sweet spot" as well and great value per dollar.)
By the way, UM2’s are fairly bass heavy, especially while they are breaking in (first 100 hours or so). The treble detail is very refined and natural - not overpowering like some other earphones.
To me these are an obvious first choice.
Caveat: There are some earphones in the $1000 range, with custom fit, that I have never tried. I’m perfectly happy with UM2.
Oh yeah, the cord is thin and flexible with a slider to adjust tension. Best to wear these with the cord draping over the top of your ear, and down your back. It is comfortable, it seems to be how they were designed to be worn, and it looks cool (can’t see the cord from the front).
Wonderful with iPods! No external amp necessary."

I’m in love!
Today I got my pair of clear UM2 and the sound is just amazing. My prior earphones were the UM1, but their bigger sister is just so much hotter.
When I put those phones into my ears and turned on one of my favorite OSTs my first thought was:
"Is there a difference between the UM1 and the UM2?"
I was confused.
After some minutes of listening I took out the UM2, switched to my UM1 and played the same song.
Then it hit me: Instruments were mysteriously "missing", there was little base, everything felt rather high-pitched.
How could this be? I’ve been living with the UM1 for one and a half years and was perfectly happy with them.
After reinserting the UM2 I understood:
The UM2 simply sounds right.
It just feels like it should, and you start smiling.
The first time I had this feeling was when I got my Yamaha Pianocraft E400 and put the first CD into it.
Everything fits.
Though they are quite a bit bigger than the UM1 they are just as comfortable.
Buyers should invest some money on Triflanges or Shure Soft Flex Silicone Tips though. It makes everything sound much clearer compared to the foamies.
Thanks everyone from Earphonesolutions, another flawless shopping experience and great service.

Westone UM2 RC
By Fábio from Brasil on April 24, 2012
Great sound! This IEM (in ear monitor) is comfortable and its sound is very defined.

To improve the performance of UM2 RC can make the silicone or acrylic mold in a specialized.
Thanks.

Great product...but
By Patrick from Florida on March 7, 2012
I bought the UM2's hoping they would live up to the praise. They offer wonderful sound quality, but when they stopped working in one bud the sound quality was meaningless. The Westones were purchased in July 2011 and are now useless. The company referral for warranty repair is direct contact with Westone. They want the purchase registration card info, which I do not have nor did I receive. I have my cc transaction reference and my order number. I cannot reach anyone at Earphone Solutions. 407 telephone number left messages no return. Sent emails no return... Not a happy customer or a good experience for 300 dollar phones.
Pros:
Sound Quality
Comfort
Cons:
Poor Quality
Customer service?
Merchant Response:

Westone UM2 with Replaceable Cables
By K-Dub from Vancouver, BC, Canada on January 15, 2012
I've had these headphones as an IEM replacement for the UE SuperFi 5 Pro that broke on me a couple years ago.
Pretty good sound but its been awhile since I had a set of IEM. They seem to have a very sturdy build. It was nice to have Comply Foam Tips included in the package as well as the free amp. That and the fact that Earphone Solutions really made this purchase decision an easy one.
Pros:
Amp
Fit
Replaceable
Sturdy Build
Cons:
Amp died after 2 months....replaced on warranty though.

Fun Earphones
By Travis from Washington, D.C. on December 29, 2011
I've had these headphones for a few months now, and figured this was a long enough amount of time since the purchase to create this quick review.
I can't necessarily say I've owned very many high-end IEMs, my previous set was the Jays Q-Jays. The Q-Jays were also dual balanced drivers, and were accurate in representing the wide range of music I listen to. That said, they were also a bit lacking when it came to bass, and after having them for a couple of years their wires failed and I figured it was time for an upgrade.
When I first took the UM2s out of the box and used them, a large grin grew across my face. They were everything the Q-Jays were, and a lot more. I even heard things in songs that the jays left out, the many subtleties of songs that go unnoticed, and was surprised since that was the first thing I said when I initially tried the jays. And they had plenty of bass to boot. A friend of mine had also recently bought a pair of Beats by Dre, and after listening to the two side by side, in my mind there is no comparison. The UMs kept out interference, kept me from turning my music up to ludicrous levels (it's not necessary), and don't overdo any particular area over another (highs, mids, and lows were better in every way).
Its also true that the more I listened to them, the better they sounded, and the more immersed I became in songs (thanks in large part to sound isolation). Sometimes I just sit back, close my eyes, and experience. I also get a bit more frustrated when listening to certain stereo systems now, as I listen to the same songs and can pick out what's specifically missing compared to when listening to my UMs.
The fact that these have replaceable cables was one of the large reasons why I sought these IEMs, aside from the high quality of westone products, as well as the favorable reviews of the UM series. However, I noticed after a couple of weeks' use that there was a little popping noise in my left earpiece. I'd hear it when I turned my head a certain way, or while jogging, and I figured it had something to do the connection of the replaceable wire and the monitor. I tried adjusting the wire, as well as pushing to make sure the pins were all the way in, and yet the noise still persists after all this time. It's not always there, but it can detract from what I'm listening to if I don't tune it out. It might be just the unit I received, not the same for all of them.
Overall, I'm very happy with these headphones; they assist me very well in my hobbies of audio production, the included amp was a welcomed bonus, and they are generally fun IEMs all around.
Pros:
- Sound isolation, accurate representation, fun
- Removable cables with braided design
- Great fit inside my ears
- Easy to run with (when worn behind the neck)
- Easy to clean
- Great selection of accessories
- Free Amp
Cons:
- The ear mold around the wire was a bit uncomfortable at first
- Though the amp was free, I can't say it significantly enhanced my listening experience
- Every now and then there's fatigue if I listen to them too long, but that probably varies with ear size
- The popping sounds made when the wire moves a certain way
I would recommend this item to a friend.
Never Knew What I Wasn't Hearing
By CG from Dayton, Ohio on October 21, 2011
From the moment I put these on, I knew it was money well spent. I enjoy listening to music again, I hear things I've been missing with other ear buds. My wife said that when I first put these on and heard music that a smile spread across my face. I use these mostly at work and wear these for at least 2 hours a day, but probably average around 4 hours a day, with no fatigue or pain.
I went from OEM headphones to Bose in-ear to UM2RC. The difference between the OEM headphones to the Bose was only a slight increase in sound quality, the sound was muddy. So I was expecting some better sound but the difference in sound the UM2RC produces is magnitudes better than what I was expecting/hoping. I won't attempt to describe the sound because I lack the knowledge and I'm not an audiophile, but I will say that these have spoiled me and I can't imagine anything sounding much better.
I only have 3 minor complaints. One, they're a slight hassle to get out, because I'm in an office, people come and talk and it takes a couple of seconds for me to pull them out, and I have to ask people to repeat what they were saying, but I am getting faster at removing them. Two, when people ask me about them I'm not sure on the pronunciation, is it West-one, or is it Wes-Tone? Three, I wish they had slightly more punch to the bass out of the box, but the bass is tight and doesn't interfere with the other sounds.
Pros:
crystal clear sound
comfort
outside noise blocking
brings a smile to my face
Cons:
could have slightly more punch to the bass
I would recommend this item to a friend.
Merchant Response:
Hi CG,
It's pronounced Wes-Tone :)
You should get much stronger bass after a while of using them (10-15 days).
Thanks for the feedback!
Awesome Product For Bass Guitarist
By Craig from near Charlotte, NC on May 11, 2011
I am very pleased with the UM2 RC in ear monitors. We have used in ear monitors for most everyone in our rock-styled church band for quite a while, but the bass guitar was one of the last areas because we were concerned that we would need some type of vibration feedback to suppliment the in ear solution (butt-kicker, etc). I am happy to say that we were wrong. All you need for any band location (including bass) is some UM2 RC in ear monitors and you can start using your wedges for boat anchors or whatever because you will not want or need them on stage any longer :-)
Pros:
Great sound reproduction qaulity
Cons:
It would be nice if the solid piece that wraps around your ear to hold it in place was about 50% longer.
I would recommend this item to a friend.
Nice quality.
By Music Fan from Washington, DC on February 8, 2011
Very good sound. I had a pair of Bose before but Westone UM2 definitely sounds better. Although I think part of the reason is that the UM2 has very good sound isolation (Bose did not). Overall, good bang for the buck.
Pros:
Excellent sound isolation. Good sound quality.
Cons:
Need more punch to the base.
I would recommend this item to a friend.
Westone UM2 - Disappointing
By Brad from Richland, Washington on November 8, 2010
I bought these late summer based on reviews on this website. Earphone Solutions was extremely helpful and provided superb service delivering my earphones. I have used these on business travel and the gym. As the other review states, these have amazing clarity and definition - WHEN THEY WORK! I purchased these because having replaceable cables eliminates the usual issues with overused cables breaking. But that said, the connectors are very cheap. They wiggle out very easily. For the money I paid I am very disappointed as I should have waited for the Shure 425 or paid the extra money for the Westone 3s. Beware!
Pros:
Sound quality
Earphone comfort
Quality earphone build (except for the cabling)
Cons:
Cables
Cables
Cables...
Merchant Response:
Brad, we are very sorry for the inconvenience. Please call me so we can get you a new one right away. 321-939-0228 Ext.222 Flavio. If you prefer we can also exchange another model.
Westone UM2 with Replaceable Cables
By Tom from Southfield, Michigan on October 22, 2010
I started using my new UM2s on Monday, October 18. I have used them everyday at the gym for one and a half to two hours per day. The sound is awesome, better than the Shure EC5s that I also own. I have had an ongoing problem with my UM2s though that is really annoying. The sound goes in and out, particularly in the left ear. At times I have no at all sound coming out of the left ear bud, other times it comes and goes intermittently. The problem appears to be with the removable cables because if I jiggle the cable connection to the ear bud when I'm having problems the sound comes on, i.e., the problem goes away. I have never removed the cables from the ear buds, they were already inserted when I opened the box. Whenever I have a sound problem, I put pressure on the connection between the ear bud and the cables to tighten it. That usually solves the problem temporarily. I always ensure that the cables are securely connected to the ear buds before I put them on. So far the UM2s play fabulously initially, but after an hour or so of cardio, the sound begins to comes and go. I am resisting sending my UM2s to Westone for warranty repair, but if my listening experience next week is the same as this week, I will reluctantly do so.
Pros:
The sound. When it works, it is truly awesome!!!!
Cons:
Sound is problematic, at times fades in and out. I suspect the removable cable is the culprit.
Merchant Response:
Dear Tom,
We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Please contact us for instructions on having your UM2 replaced under warranty.
Dual driver earphones. Very "musical", "fun", great for rock n roll and strong bass. Very comfortable, the UM2 has better designed cables, providing better fit and better comfort than the all other models tested except for Westone 1 and Westone 2. They fit exactly like the UM3X. Customer service from Westone is outstanding. Extremely fast and responsive. Also, the Westone UM2 and UM3X are the ONLY earphones still Made in USA. The replaceable cables are very well built and the plug / jack system is way superior to UE's version which used to have socket issues.
