Ultimate Ears, was founded by Jerry Harvey and Alex Van Halen in 1995. Van Halen, the drummer for rock band Van Halen, had his ears stop working in the middle of a concert. Harvey, Van Halen's touring monitor engineer, created the custom molded earpiece for him. Other band members became interested and Harvey crafted further sets. Other musicians that saw the in-ear monitors were interested - it appeared that there was a market. Ultimate Ears, after seven years making custom ear monitors for professional musicians, decided to target the "consumer" market. They came out with a universal fit earphones/monitors under the series of "SuperFi", using the same single and dual driver technology as the custom-molded products however with a much wider (and not so comfortable) nozzle. The "SuperFi" line was a success. Last year Ultimate Ears was acquired by Logitech which implemented some changes in the distribution and changed the warranty from 2 years to 1 year.
