Shure SE425 Chrome
Shure bounced back really strong with these new earphones. Not much buzz, Shure quietly puts out an extraordinary product. The looks and form of the new SE425 is simply a beauty. This is a dual balanced armature driver with a 2-way passive crossover design and a removable cable with a never seen snapping system. All at $299. This is a great price point for a dual driver, in ear headphones that come with a 2 Year Warranty (when you purchase form an Authorized Shure dealer such as ourselves) and the new featured replaceable cable.

Amazing earphones!!! WTF!!! THX great deal
Pros:
Sound, isolating, ..... With flac or alac it's outstanding!!
Cons:
Hard to put on ears thé first Time, CAN be more easy...
By Christopher from Los Angeles , CA on October 3, 2011
Overall I am very satisfied with the performance of these earphones. The bass could be better, and requires a snug fit, but based on the type of music I listen to, I don't really require extremely high quality bass.
Pros:
Great fit
crisp highs
solid mids
detachable cables are nice
Cons:
bass could be better

One outstanding set of Headphones!
By Van from Honolulu, HI on September 8, 2011
I upgraded from the Shure SE315's to these, and I'll just say that there was a very noticeable difference! The 315s provided very nice mids and highs but were very lacking on the lows. The 425's offer the same mids/highs (if not better) with lows that you can feel to make the music experience complete. The bass is not over-powering either where it can become annoying or drown out the mids/highs. The 425's offer a balanced sound that go great with any type of music. Remember that the seal is everything for a satisfying sound so ensure you have the right-fitting ear tips.
- I like to run with these so I wish they came with a shirt clip or something more accommodating to athletic activities.

among the Best, if not the Best Dual Armature Driver IEM
By WX from Portland on August 14, 2011
Simply Love the Mids but it maybe too forward for some of you.
The Bass is adequate for me and is nicely controlled.
The SE535 & SE423 simply looks the most gorgeous among all the IEMs.
Had no difficulty removing the tips and switching them to the comply tips.
The shell and cable constructions are way better than with the previous generation of Shures; if only they came with 46 or 50 inch cables.
Pros:
Definitely the Mids as expected from a Shure Product :)
Nice and Durable Construction
Cons:
64" cable was a tad too long for my liking

Great Upgrade!
By Bruce from Central MA on July 11, 2011
I just upgraded from the Westone 1's because I wanted a slightly higher listening quality. But I went with the Shures because they had a beefier cable for riding motorcycle and I always get the wires accidentally caught in my helmet clasp. I have good hearing and use the triple flange sleeve ear pieces--which really block a lot of noise!---and I can hear a wonderful range of music at normal, non-damaging levels, even at full speed. I also purchased the Shure PLUS music phone cable controller for iPods and it works really well. This combo is great for any activity, but especially those like motorcycling that have a lot of background noise you want to block out.
Pros:
Beefy cables
Cons:
slightly larger, but still doesn't interfere with my helmet.

Only the best
By Monica from Norway/Florida on May 3, 2011
These earphones take a bit to get used to. Hard to get into ears the first 20 times. Once you get it, you'll be lost in the music. Perfect fit with NO outside disturbing noises. Nice sound, good bass when the fit is right. Nice vibrations! Listen to: house, rap, alternative, pop, blues.
Pros:
Perfect fit.
Does't fall out while running
Nice sound
Cons:
Very hard to get them to fit the first many times.
Hard to change tips.

Great product

The product works! Took a week to get the ear piece to fit comfortably. Other than that, I'm very satisfied.

Great headphones
By Joel from Balwyn, Victoria on January 30, 2011
I've had Shure before and went for a new pair when my old one broke at the cable connection to the headphones.
I was pretty excited about the new cable system with replaceable cables. Headphones sound balanced. Yes the best is not what some would expect but I like the balance. Got this with the iPhone mic cable and they work well together. It's not easy to to fit into the ear initially, it takes practice. But once it's in it's very comfy. I also like the fact the earphones don't protrude out so you can lie down with them on.
Not a strong base as some would like but I'm happy with them
I would recommend this item to a friend.
Love them...

Shure SE425 In Ear Monitors
By Stephen from Ridgewood, NJ on January 20, 2011
I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to buy a quality in ear monitor. Startlingly accurate mids and highs, with adequate bass. Sound great with all types of music.
Pros:
Replaceable cable
Accurate Mids
Great Detail in music
Cons:
Bass isn't very present unless you have great seal with foam tips.
I would recommend this item to a friend.
Smooth, detailed, expansive sound and excellent build quality.
By Andy H. from Brooklyn, New York on October 15, 2010
I've had these for about a month now, and I can see why they're kind of under the radar: they're not cheap, nor are they at the top of the pyramid. But they are what they are: a balanced, honest, revealing pair of $300 IEMs, with a raft of other appealing traits.
I can't fairly compare these to what everyone would want me to compare them to (the SE535s, Westones, etc), but I do have a few points of reference, namely a pair of closed-back Beyerdynamic DT770s fed by a Headroom Total Bithead, and a pair of Sennheiser HD600s powered by a Leben CS600, which also drives a pair of Devore Super 8s. Also I have some latent memories of ER6s, E2Cs, and so on.
One thing that you might not believe is that these balanced-armature units do break in -- it took about 2 weeks of daily use, and I expect they may continue to change. They're becoming more full-sounding, rounder, while not losing any of the quick edge and sparkle. These will never satisfy those looking for thumping bass, but that's not what you get these for.
If you're familiar with my home rig equipment, you might guess that midrange and smoothness is vitally important to me, and these deliver. You can hear into complex instrumentation in a natural, not clinical way -- everything is so clean. Unexpectedly for an IEM, they are open and spacious, coming closer to the open-back HD600s than other IEMs I've tried. These won't be a rocker's best friend, but anything acoustic is especially well served. Classical and jazz fans will be very pleased (as am I). But I'm typing this as I'm very much enjoying The Black Keys: Brothers, so they're really quite versatile.
So they sound good, but in reality I chose these out of many practical reasons as well: first, they look good. Second, they look indestructible, and further, they feel like it. I really like the build quality, it's very reassuring (remember the other IEMs I mentioned? Broken.), and also very comfortable. The over-the-ear formable wire helps with the stability of the unit in-ear; it doesn't jiggle around. Finally, they're $200 cheaper than the SE535s. Enough to get a decent headphone amp.
There's a couple of niggles: they're somewhat fidgety to put in, especially if you've chosen the foam eartips which require compression prior to insertion. And I fully expected to stick with the silicone eartips purely out of convenience's sake, but the foam tips sound so much better and provide such good isolation that I'm willing to put up with the hassle. NYC subway crazies are completely and satisfyingly blocked out. Another disappointment is with the included case, which is provided but very not-premium, definitely not up to the standards set by the device itself. And the bulky 1/8th-inch connector won't fit in an iPhone 4 with a bumper case.
The case is a non-issue since the cord is long enough for me to wear around my neck, and when on the go, I have a non-cased iPhone 3GS, which powers it just fine, with the volume sitting around 60-75% depending on the music. Whenever possible though, these should really be used with an amp, and the Total Bithead gave these more punch and smoothness. But since I had an extra $200 sitting around from not buying the SE535, I ordered a $130 NuForce uDAC-2, which is even more "more" -- more detail, more air, more punch, more smooth. The DT770s for whatever reason were not granted this magical level of "more", whereas the SE425 said, "yes, more, thanks!"
Anyway, I'm glad that Shure makes these very balanced, not-bass-heavy IEMs with extraordinary build quality and versatility, because as a discerning listener and average working human, I enjoy them very much.
Pros:
Smooth, tonally balanced, great midrange. Responds well to amping, still enjoyable from plain vanilla portable player. Outstanding build quality, looks cool.
Cons:
Fidgety insertion, ho-hum case, bulky connector.
I would recommend this item to a friend.

Thanks for the great review!
Ok, not great
By Anthony Frankenfield from Minnesota on October 8, 2010
I liked them, but were not blown away. The sound quality is close to the lower end Westone's, such as UM1 and 1. They are not as good as Westone, and I was expecting this. However, I purchased them because of the removable cord which would make the life extend, thus making them a smart investment.
I was put off by the time it took for these to get in my ears properly, but maybe that's just me. The flexible cord by the ear takes a long time to break in, and the burn-in doesn't help the bass, thus leaving the bass similiar to open box, which is HORRID! The base is not balanced, it's just simply unexistant really. I am not a bass-head or heavy-metal junky, and do not like to listen to people screem into the mic. The bass, made me return them. The high's were clear, and the noise isolation was pretty decent, but overall. NOT WORTH $300.00 ! TRUST ME!
Pros:
Somewhat Good Noise Cancellation
Good Noise Isolation
Clear Highs, but not close to 300.00
Comfort
Cons:
If you want headphones for somewhat decent bass, go for Klipsch or Westone 3's. It's worth the investment, and the bass does NOT DROWN OUT THE MUSIC! Period
Time consuming to put in ears, and out.
Not worth the money, for cheap knock-off quality.
Merchant Response:
I was able to get great bass from the SE425 but it took the 4th eartip set to get there.
Remember, if the seal is less than excellent, so will be the bass, since the low frequency is what leaks out when the seal is not good.
Thanks for the great review Anthony. We appreciate the feedback!
Highs in the right place. Clear vocals. Strong and controlled bass. The SE425 features well balanced dual drivers. What a nice surprise! Rich and detailed it does not leave you feeling as if there's something missing. The highs are in the right place; the mids are clear and provide phenomenal vocals while the bass is strong yet controlled. Improved cable design, improved earpiece manufacturing, deliver astounding looks with hard to top comfort and fit.
Phone Interview with Shure's Matt Engstrom Summer of 2010:
The new SE425 replaces the old SE420 and SE420-K.
We just had a great conference call with Matt Engstrom with Shure about the new headphones that will hit the market in mid June. The Shure SE535 and Shure SE425 earphones.
The new earphones will not be a simple rebranding of the SE530 and SE420. It will in fact be two re-engineered products.
Drivers: the SE425 will have 2 balanced armature drivers which will feature distinct driver assembly. The SE535 will feature 3 drivers. The driver assembly has been changed and the 2-way crossover will be located in a different manner than the old SE530.
Cables: Certainly the greatest feature of the new SE535 and SE425 headphones will be the detachable cables. I was somewhat concerned about this because of historical issues with UE cables but Matt told me that Shure decided to not use any of the existing attachment systems in the market and for that, they tested all the existing ones plus 20 different types of connectors and then went with a new developed attachment similar to what is used with the very expensive Countryman microphones.
It's a type of coaxial attachment but different than all existing replaceable earphone cables. Shure tested the new cable for a couple of years and chose to go with a very high end material. Different than some other manufacturers, the replaceable cables will be covered under Shure's excellent 2 year warranty. Another feature on the new cable is the formable wire at the earpiece end allowing the user to shape the cable around the back of the ear similar to what was featured on the E5c and SCL5 which always received great feedback from professional musicians.
Cables will be available in 2 colors: CLEAR and BLACK. The SE535 and SE425 earphones will also be available in 2 colors: CLEAR and METALLIC BRONZE for SE535 and CHROME and BLACK for the SE425 and the earphones will be shipped with the respective color cable (CLEAR for SE535 CLEAR and SE435 CHROME; BLACK for SE535 Metallic Bronze and SE425 BLACK). The new cables will be made of an improved material and will be 60" long. YAY!! No connection at 12" mark like the old SE series. It is a straight cable connecting from the earpiece to the source (MP3 player, iPod, iPhone, body-pack transmitter). The new Shure cables will also be even more flexible and lighter than the excellent cables on the SCL5 (old E5c). Extra cables should cost around $20.
They will come with Shure's 2 year warranty (plug time: provided you purchase your SE425 or SE535 from an authorized Shure dealer such as Earphone Solutions ;)
Colors: - SE535 will be available in CLEAR and METALLIC BRONZE and SE425 will be available in CHROME and BLACK.
Connection on the source: 3.5mm plug, 90 degree angle.
Connection on the earpiece: snapping type that takes several pounds to detach. Grammy will not be able to replace the cables for you.
Earpieces: The form of both SE535 and SE435 are VERY similar. They are both smaller than SE530 and SE420 and according to Matt, their most comfortable earphones ever built. I'm excited about this one. After hours of listening, comfort and fit become a deal breaker for me, so for the sounds of it, I should enjoy these more than my SE530s.
Compatibility: All iPods, iPhones, MP3 players and any source with a 3.5mm earphone input jack
Prices: SE425 Black or Chrome - Our Price $299.00 SE535 Metallic Bronze or Clear - Our Price $499.00
I really liked the price point of the new SE425. The old SE420 struggled to find its place in the market but at $299 with improved drivers and cables, the new SE425 will most likely be a success.
The SE535 will be a no brainer with these "Shure style" replaceable cables, smaller redesigned earpieces and keeping everything that was right: the sound, with small assembly changes in the drivers.
