Fantastic
By Richard from Boca Raton, FL on July 6, 2009
Great for audiophiles and Noise Isolation. If your idea of quality sound is bass than these are not for you. However, if your into audio accuracy and a real sweet sound that can evoke emotion, than these are worth trying. The highs, mids are crystal clear and the lows are tight & accurate. So, unless you are prepared to spend another $150 you will not find a better sounding universal earphone. DO NOT use 128K music files. sync in at least 256K or higher--preferably higher--AIFF or WAV
Pros:
Comfortable, Clean sounding and incredible noise isolation
Cons:
for the price none..

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Significant Improvement
By CJB on February 14, 2009
Bought tese to replace a pair of SE-3s that broke after a few years of use (housing came apart). These units sound significantly better, more bass, cleaner highs. with the SE-3s it was always a toss up between taking them or carrying the extra bulk of my Bose QC-2s on long-haul flights. Now it is an easy decision and my briefcase is lighter because of it.

Great, when kept in proper context
By Salvador on October 20, 2008
If thought of as an improvement to the E4, SE 420 is a complete success. If thought of as a competitor to the SE 530, SE 420 falls a bit short. Considering the price and product name, it is obviously the former.

SE 420 offers tight and precise sound. Soundscape is well produced overall and is pleasing to the ear. Also, they are very comfortable, like the SE 530 but with the added benefit of being smaller.

I would probably rate the SE 420 higher if not for my owning a pair of SE 530's. When comparing the two, the SE 420's sound "small". This could probably be remedied with a competent equalizer, but with an iPhone 3G the difference is obvious.

SE 420, great choice
By archigius on June 4, 2008
If the editors' definition of tight bass is balanced, equilibrated, they are right; if they mean weak, they aren't.
These are one of the most equilibrated IEMs i've listened, meaning the bass is present, clear but never overhanging the other frequencies.
So i can hear a good and strong bass where it is strong, and a less prominent bass where the song has it so.

Mids on Shure IEM are a leged, and on the 420 too, very clear and detailed.
The 420 has great hights too, well balanced with no sibilance, but no so emphasized.
I've them by three months, listening a lot of musical genres, and they've never distorted a single note.
Fantastic soundstage, is incredible on acoustic guitars!

The SE420 responds very well to equalizer when it is needed; i use the equalizer on albums with bad studio recording quality.
In other words, these are hight fidelity IEMs, with a lot of details across the entire frequency range:
the only thing that can give poor results is a bad sound source or poorly encoded mp3 files.
Comfort and fit also are excellent, the best for comfort, sound quality and isolation is to use the PA910 black foam sleeves.

WOW
By Felix on May 7, 2008
These are one of the Best Earphones you can get. I also own the Shure Se530, and the Westone Um2. Not a big fan of ulitmate ears. But i can tell you that, these are inferior to Shure Se530, but THses are REALLY GOOD. The bass is tight, the highs and mid's are very very clear and crisp. Very warm when they need to be.

And to a response to Juli above. I Absolutely disagree. The Se210 may very well be "BETTER FITTING" than the Se420, but these are SUPERIOR earphones tot he SE210. I've tried them, people with bad hearing or just don't really look out for the parts in the music that really show how good a earphone is will probably say the same as you. but when your a audiophile, musician, or a instrument player. then you will mos tlikely instantly tell the sound quality and difference the Se210 and Se420 makes.

No better than the SE210
By Juli on July 8, 2007
Have been waiting ages for these and finally got a pair last week. What can I say? I'm very very disappointed. Compared to my friend's SE210's - there is virtually no difference other than the vocals seem more 'muted' on the 420s. If you don't get a chance to try the 210s first, you'd probably think the 420s sound very good - and they do, but that's without comparison to the much cheaper 210s.
The 420s do not deliver at twice the price of the 210s, I cannot stress that enough. I was expecting to be blown away by the dual-driver vs single-driver model - and the truth is I found it a huge letdown. I have the E4g's and was happy-ish with them, but bought the 420s for the 'warmer' sound, as I use quite a 'bright' player and thought the combination would be better. Boy, was I wrong - it's warmer, yes - but it's not better. I feel somewhat cheated into being led to believe the 420s would be such a huge 'upgrade' from a single-driver model, when the truth is they sound exactly the same as the 210s, but with more muted vocals.
If I had to choose either the 210s, 420s, E4g's , the 420s would come last. This is one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced with a Shure headphone. Seriously, try the 210s first, and then imagine the same sound but with foggier vocals. That is the 420! I thought bass was identical on both models, so the dual driver seems to be a waste of space as you can't detect the difference!
Save your money and pass on the 420s.

For those who want to upgrade to a dual driver without compromising the quality of the sound separation. Not as good as the Westone UM2 in sound quality, design and comfort.
