They have a serious competitor – and probably their equal sonically speaking – in Westone’s UM2's. But to my mind Shure takes a slight edge because of the overall construction, design, and transparent sound.
The E5's come in a large, sturdy plastic box with two compartments inside for the phones and tips, or two sets of phones. Very workmanlike. The E5C’s come in a small, square, brushed metallic cube. Very high-tech. The earphones themselves are identical.
The E5's produce the most natural, defined, clear, clean sound I’ve ever heard in any earphone. The bass is full, precise. Never boomy. The middle is warm and sweet. Vocals are natural and effortless. The top is bright and clear. Harpsichord, cymbals, gongs are brilliant, and never shatter because overtones are reproduced impeccably. This is undoubtedly due to the remarkable dual drivers in the earpieces with separate woofers, tweeters, and sophisticated crossover system.
The well-thought-out construction of the E5's extends beyond their sound to more practical matters. The wires are quite substantial and, when listening in the New York City subway, I need substantial! And the best isolation -- which is where Shure needs a leg up. None of the tips they include with the elegant E5's compare in comfort, fit, and effective isolation to the Comply Canal Tips which come with Westone’s UM2's. I discovered that the CCT’s also fit the E5s, heard the results, and loved them even more. Finally, the ‘memory wires’ on the earpieces are a design coup. They mold to your ear and make it easy to recognize the left and right pieces. They can be put on quickly, without the usual peering for little red and blue dots. Small thing, maybe, but major convenience.
The E5's are legendary, and they earned their reputation through near-faultless design and detail.
