Watch out, Westone UM2 and Shure SCL5 (discontinued as of May 1st, 2010). There's a new kid on the block, the Westone UM3X, that is poised to take over as the best earphone for stage monitoring. It has three drivers and and a true three-way crossover configuration, and best of all, it's the only earphone with all those features and a universal fit too. The Westone UM2 is still a great option for live concert monitoring, but the UM3X is the cream of the crop for discriminating professionals. If you want earphones with removable cables the Shure SE535, Westone UM3X-RC and UM2-RC have just that.
If you're considering more affordable options...
The Shure SCL2 and Westone UM1, all of which have single drivers, note that the Shure SCL2 has slightly stronger bass and the UM1 is more balanced. The UM1 has the most comfortable fit. The cable design of the UM1 is also superior to the Shure SCL2.

| The UM3X was originally designed for professional musicians for stage monitoring but I LOVE mine and I'm not a musician. I use it mostly with my iPhone. The short difference between the UM3X and the Westone 3 is that the Westone 3 is bolder and has a more emphasized high frequency while the UM3X has a more forward mid range and warmer sound. My rule of thumb: if I am listening for less than 2 hours I use my Westone 3 (richer); if I'm listening for more than 2 hours I use my UM3X (less fatiguing). |

| Huge upgrade from stock earbuds. A great first in-ear earphone. Good bass and much more detail than consumer in-ear earphones. The cables on the SCL2 Black is 5 inches shorter than the SCL2 clear. We prefer them with the shorter cables because it's less to deal with and still enough to reach the iPod on your waist. The SCL2 are very nicely finished and they come with a 2 Year no hassle replacement or repair policy by Shure when purchased from Earphone Solutions. |
