Phonak Audeo PFE 122 - great sound and easy fit
By Stu from Calgary, AB on November 18, 2010

Prior to buying these earphones I had read a lot of reviews of various high-quality IEMs including the higher-ranking models by Etymotic, Ultimate Ears, Shure, Westone and some others. I also has experience with some mid-level Shures like the SCL3 and SCL4.
I picked the PFE 122 based on the fact the reviews ranked them very highly, the price and the fact that they have a built-in mic/controller that works with my iPhone 4. I also liked the fact that the included audio filters allow you to alter the tone somewhat to your preference.
I find the sound quality to be outstanding. They allow you to hear details in music recordings that are difficult to hear, if not more-or-less completely masked, by other decent quality IEMs. However, they also have a very pleasant sound and are not harsh or cold sounding. They have a very balanced sound and, for my tastes, have enough bass. They are natural sounding.
I have listened to other IEMs that have a more bass-oriented sound but I find those types usually mask a lot of the upper midrange and treble details and that the bass becomes more annoying after listening for a while - particularly given the lack of detail. The PFE 122s, with their natural sound, provide an open, balanced, full sound that is very enjoyable.
These earphones are also very, very easy to fit into your ears. They achieve a good seal effortlessly and don't require you to cram the earpieces into your ear to get a good seal unlike some other brands. This leads to a more comfortable wearing experience and also means that they are not finicky because they just sit nicely where they're supposed to be without requiring constant re-adjustment.
The cable is sturdy and of good quality without being too thin or too thick. They unravel reasonably easy and don't try to stay coiled and are therefore friendly to use and easy to route where you want them to go. They also bend reasonably easily because they're not stiff.
The included accessories are very generous and the case is very nice and a good shape for packing and quite soft. The variety of ear pieces included should allow most people to find a set that fits them very well.
Overall I rate these IEMs very highly and would definitely recommend them.

Merchant Response:
Thanks Stu.Good, but not for me.

I must have weird shaped ear canals because I can not get a good seal with any of these canal-buds. The sound is good on these. It is a little weak if your device does not have enough power to boost the signal, but all new devices do have enough power. Also do not use an extension cord for your jack because there is no power at all and it is a very tinny sound.
Pros:
Good quality and sound.Cons:
Does not fit my ear drum.I would recommend this item to a friend.
Great multipurpose earbuds.

I was a little concerned that these would fall between two stools -- that I'd be getting mediocre earbuds for my iPod and a mediocre way to talk on my iPhone, the aural equivalent of those hateful VCR/TV combos from back in the day. I'm very pleased to have been proven wrong. Sound quality is excellent, and these even fended off my inner Amish person, allowing me to talk on my iPhone hands free. Next up: a set for the wife, so she won't be terrorizing the streets while she drives and talks on the phone, or throws her cell to the floor of the car midsentence because she thinks she may have caught a glimpse of the popo.
Pros:
Excellent sound quality on a variety of devices
ease of use -- filters, replacements, etc.Cons:
What, no pony? I was told it came with a pony.I would recommend this item to a friend.
3.5 stars.

Overall: a good set of phones for the money.
Pros:
Pros: excellent imaging, good clear mids and highs. Very musical, listenable. Had trouble getting a good seal with the various earpieces but the Etymotic triple flange (long stem) -which are my favorite earpieces, fit perfectly.Cons:
Con: low end is on the weak side. Friction on the cabling transfers considerable sound but that is not uncommon. I would recommend this item to a friend.
